Walktober
Orbost Regional Health has joined the Walktober Challenge which aims to encourage physical activity every day. ORH registered with the Walktober website and sourced some pedometers which were offered free of charge to encourage staff to join the ORH team and record their walking efforts for the month of October.
During the Challenge, individuals login to the Challenge website and record their walks (minutes or steps). The Challenge website keeps track of an individual's walking trips and are automatically added to the teams results.
All you need to do is walk – anytime, anywhere – for 15 minutes or more.
The website also shows the benefits of being active ... getting fit, staying healthy, and being kind to the environment. You can see how far you have walked, the kilojoules you've burned, the total minutes walked, and the greenhouse gas you've saved (by leaving your car at home).
Walking can improve health and fitness. Walking can help you lose body fat and maintain a healthy weight, improve your fitness and reduce your risk of developing conditions such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis and some cancers. To get the health benefits, try to walk for at least 30 minutes as briskly as you can most days of the week.
